The Definability strength of Combinatorial Principles
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce the definability strength of combinatorial principles. In terms of definability strength, a combinatorial principle is strong if solving a corresponding combinatorial problem could help in simplifying the definition of a definable set. We prove that some consequences of Ramsey’s Theorem for colorings of pairs could help in simplifying the definitions of some Δ2 sets, while some others could not. We also investigate some consequences of Ramsey’s Theorem for colorings of longer tuples. These results of definability strength have some interesting consequences in reverse mathematics, including strengthening of known theorems in a more uniform way and also new theorems. §

Profiles of covering arrays of strength two
Covering arrays of strength two have been widely studied as combinatorial models of software interaction test suites for pairwise testing. While numerous algorithmic techniques have been developed for the generation of covering arrays with few columns (factors), the construction of covering arrays with many factors and few tests by these techniques is problematic. Random generation techniques c...
متن کاملThe Strength of Some Combinatorial Principles Related to Ramsey’s Theorem for Pairs
We study the reverse mathematics and computability-theoretic strength of (stable) Ramsey’s Theorem for pairs and the related principles COH and DNR. We show that SRT2 implies DNR over RCA0 but COH does not, and answer a question of Mileti by showing that every computable stable 2-coloring of pairs has an incomplete ∆2 infinite homogeneous set. We also give some extensions of the latter result, ...
متن کاملDefinability of Combinatorial Functions and Their Linear Recurrence Relations
We consider functions of natural numbers which allow a combinatorial interpretation as density functions (speed) of classes of relational structures, such as Fibonacci numbers, Bell numbers, Catalan numbers and the like. Many of these functions satisfy a linear recurrence relation over Z or Zm and allow an interpretation as counting the number of relations satisfying a property expressible in M...
متن کاملThe Defining Power of Stratified and Hierarchical Logic Programs
We investigate the defining power of stratified and hierarchical logic programs. As an example for the treatment of negative information in the context of these structured programs we also introduce a stratified and hierarchical closed-world assumption. Our analysis tries to relate the defining power of stratified and hierarchical programs (with and without an appropriate closed-world assumptio...
متن کاملRamsey Theory Is Needed for Solving Definability Problems of Generalized Quantifiers
In recent years, generalized quantifiers (see [H3]) have received quite a lot of novel interest because of their applications to computer science and linguistics. Their definability theory has made considerable progress during the last decade, which will be the subject of the next section. The proofs of many of these results often use results of Ramsey theory, such as theorems of van der Waerde...
